After hearing our oldest campers complain for years, we finally got it -- older kids simply don't want to spend their time playing games and making crafts. That's why we created the Zoo Teens program, a special week of activities for campers aged 12-14. Our Zoo Teens week is always a highlight of the summer and we hope all Zoo Teens will become lifelong volunteers at the zoo after their camp ends.
Activities
Zoo Teen weeks are designed to be more hands-on, more interactive, and more challenging. Campers participate in daily volunteer time and classes on biology, anatomy, and zookeeper. They also have a chance to participate in field trips throughout the week. In 2010, for instance, campers visited Raven's Rock State Park, Rolesville Veterinary Hospital, the Duke Lemur Center, and took a canoe trip down the Neuse. This year, we're also giving campers the option to "camp out" on the last night in tents at the zoo so they can learn more about the sounds of the zoo at night.
Cost
Zoo Teens camp is $225/week. This increased cost covers the price of transportation and admission for field trips.
Graduation
On the final day of camp, parents and families are invited to participate in a special "graduation" ceremony for their new Zoo Teens. At 3:00 p.m. we'll be hosting light refreshments while the campers receive their certificates. Then, they can show you around the farm to show off what they've learned!
Overnight
All Zoo Teens have the option to participate in a "campout" on the last evening of camp. (Friday night) Interested campers can stay at the zoo or return home after graduation. Activities will begin at 7:00 p.m. (For those that stay at the zoo, pizza will be provided.) Pickup will be at 9:00 a.m. the following morning. (An additional $25 fee is required.)
